Season: Dry Season Only. Northern Hemisphere's spring and summer ( from March to October)
Description:
The snow-peaked mountain, Ausangate, is located to the south-west of Cusco, at a height of 6384m/20944ft and is the highest mountain in the Vilcanota mountain range.
During Inca times, it was considered sacred and still today it is held in awe, if not worshipped.
The richness of the landscape, the variety of plant and animal life and the exhilaration of being ‘on top of the world’ make this trek perfect for mountain lovers.
Day 1:
We pick you up from your hotel at about 10.30am and travel by bus (5 and a half hours) to the village of Tinky (3900m/12795ft). We will spend the night in a hostal here.
Day 2:
After breakfast at 8am, we will start our trek, walking towards Upis.
The distance to this village is approximately 13 kilometres and along the way, we will have beautiful views of the typical high Andean scenery. We will camp near this village at a height of 4400m/14435ft.
Day 3:
We will have breakfast and start hiking uphill to reach Arapa pass (4850m/15911ft) and then on towards Ausangate lake.
Today we will have impressive views of the snow-peaked mountains of the Vilcanota range and see an amazing variety of flora and fauna from the high Andes, such as vicunas, condors etc. We will camp beside Ausangate lake (4650m/15255ft)..
Day 4:
After breakfast we will ascend towards the highest pass of the trek, Palomani (5100m/16732ft). From this point, you are surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery and you can often see the spectacular, natural phenomenon – the avalanche.
We will then descend on an unforgettable, impressive route to reach the beautiful Qomerqocha lake (4800m/15747ft) where we camp for the night.
Day 5:
On our final day, we walk to Pacchanta thermal springs, which are at the edge of Ausangate River. Here, we will have a soothing dip before continuing our trek again towards Tinky. In this village, we will have lunch and then take our bus to Cusco. We will arrive back at about 9pm.
