Day 1:
We pick you up from your hotel and travel by bus to Mollepata and then on to Soraypampa in a smaller bus. We will have lunch in Soraypampa with panoramic views of beautiful snow-capped mountains (Umantay and Salkantay) – just the start! We will begin our trek towards Suyro Cocha, our first campsite (4200m/13750ft) taking in the beautiful landscape along the way.
Day 2:
We will have breakfast at 6.30am and begin our walk to the highest pass on this trek (4750m/155300ft) located halfway between Umantay mountain (4120m/13500ft) and Salkantay mountain (6271m/20575ft). From the pass, the views of the 2 snow-capped mountains are incredible.
After a rest, we will continue our walk through a dramatic cloud forest towards Huayracpunku, where we will have lunch. We hike again after lunch in the direction of the start of the jungle until we reach our second campsite Colcapampa(3300m/10800ft).
Day 3:
After breakfast, at 6.30am, we start trekking for the day through the upper jungle crossing the Lluskamayo River and a variety of little brooks to reach Playa, our lunch stop. From here, we will take a bus to Santa Teresa, our third campsite.
After a rest, we will go to the hot springs and enjoy the well-deserved soothing water.
Day 4:
We will have breakfast at 8am and leave our campsite and Santa Teresa. We will cross the Santa Teresa bridge and follow the upward route of the river. We continue walking, passing a variety of crop plantations, coca, banana etc.
Until we reach the hydroelectric station town. Here, we will visit a small sacred Inca site. At about 4pm, we will go by train to Aguas Calientes. We will spend the night in a hotel.
Day 5:
We will have breakfast at 5.45am then catch the first bus to Machu Picchu (15-minute ride) in order to appreciate the magnificent sunrise over the city.
A walking tour (approximately 2 hours) is given by your guide and after this you can explore the mysterious city by yourselves.
If you still have energy you can also climb Huayna Picchu (2720m/8890ft)!!! It takes 45 minutes to reach the top.
You will meet your guide in Aguas Calientes (it can be reached by bus or on foot) for lunch and to be given your train tickets back to Cusco. The train usually leaves at 15.55 and we will arrive back in Cusco at about 20.45.
If desired, an extra night in Aguas Calientes town can be arranged. This option is very popular as it allows more time to explore Machu Picchu. There are also thermal springs in the town (entrance 5 soles) which are a real treat after finishing the trail.
